Want to know why I love Earth Day? Because after 4.5 billion years of sustaining life, it’s the closest our planet has to a birthday celebration!
So, what makes April 22nd so special? This is the date in 1970 that US Senator Gaylord Nelson asked for a “national teach-in on the environment” after a major oil spill off the coast of California. From that initial call, it would take only 20 years for Earth Day to go global. Today, it is celebrated in 192 countries.
At Green Girl Recycling, we are thrilled to be a part of this larger movement. Since starting this company, I have been inspired over and again by the commitment that the people and the companies we work with have to protect our environment. I want to take a moment to thank you, our customers, for the partnership you have formed with us as we work toward this common goal.
One company which really stands out in my mind for making every day Earth Day is Eco-Products®, producer of convenient and compostable products like plates, utensils and cups. Last week, Green Girl had the privilege of hauling and recycling for an e-waste round-up for this amazing Boulder-based company. Eco-Products hosts these round-ups annually, which are free for their employees. They set up extremely well labeled containers in their kitchen break-room, advertising to the whole company they may bring in items from home as well as purge from their office for a week before we come haul it away.
Not only do they care for their employees, but they care for their visitors – and completely bathed us in hospitality while we were there. (Thanks for the tea, the fresh fruit and T-shirts, Mary!)
In addition to recycling 581 pounds of electronics, they also wrangled up 6 toner cartridges, 52 pounds of paper to be shredded and a 35 pound box of clothing!
Green inside and out, Eco-Products is a great example to us all and we hope you are as inspired by them as we are.
Be on the lookout for some exciting things coming down the pipe this year all around us. In Boulder, for example, the new Zero Waste Ordinance goes into effect June 1st, which requires all residential and commercial folks to recycle and compost in order to help reduce methane-producing organic waste from the Boulder landfill.
Things are bustling at Green Girl, too. Not only are we are gearing up to give our web site a face lift, we are also about ready to begin production on an informational video about our services. We’ll be sure and post a link as soon as it’s complete.
In the meantime, thank you all for being such amazing people to work with and keep thinking green! It is truly a privilege to care for this planet with you. Happy Earth Day!
